Frequently Asked Questions
Amazon enforces specific character limits for each listing field. Product titles allow up to 200 characters (80 recommended for mobile readability). Each of the five bullet points allows up to 500 characters (200 recommended). The product description supports up to 2,000 characters. Backend search terms are limited to 250 bytes, which matters for non-ASCII characters that use multiple bytes.
Standard ASCII characters (letters, numbers, basic punctuation) use 1 byte each, so 250 bytes equals 250 characters. However, accented characters (like e with accent) use 2 bytes, and characters from languages like Chinese, Japanese, or Korean can use 3 or 4 bytes each. Amazon measures backend search terms in bytes, so if you use non-ASCII characters, your byte count will be higher than your character count.
While Amazon allows up to 200 characters for product titles, only about 80 characters are visible on mobile devices without being truncated. Since over 70% of Amazon shoppers browse on mobile, keeping your title under 80 characters ensures your most important keywords and product details are visible to all shoppers without being cut off.
If your listing content exceeds Amazon's character limits, the listing may be suppressed or the extra text may be silently truncated. Amazon's systems can also reject flat file uploads that exceed limits. For backend search terms, exceeding the 250-byte limit can cause Amazon to ignore all of your search terms entirely, which significantly hurts discoverability.
